CTE Admission Procedures

The Governing Board is committed to providing equal opportunity for all individuals in district programs and activities. District programs, activities, and practices shall be free from unlawful discrimination, including discrimination against an individual or group based on race, color, ancestry, nationality, national origin, immigration status, ethnic group identification, ethnicity, age, religion, marital status, pregnancy, parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or genetic information; a perception of one or more of such characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics.

All individuals shall be treated equitably in the receipt of district and school services. Personally identifiable information collected in the implementation of any district program, including, but not limited to, student and family information for the free and reduced-price lunch program, transportation, or any other educational program, shall be used only for the purposes of the program, except when the Superintendent or designee authorizes its use for another purpose in accordance with law. Resources and data collected by the district shall not be used, directly or by others, to compile a list, registry, or database of individuals based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin, or immigration status or any other category identified above.

District programs and activities shall be free of any racially derogatory or discriminatory school or athletic team names, mascots, or nicknames.

The CTE Director and site administration are responsible for disseminating information about career technical education programs through local school assemblies, the counseling department, and school events. Listed below are a variety of methods in which Career Technical Education Programs and courses can be shared.

A.  Visitations with an informational presentation to 8th grade classes in local middle schools in the spring.

B.  During 8th grade orientation when middle school students come to campus, prospective students have an opportunity to visit career technical programs on display and have the opportunity to speak with students and teachers to find out more about the programs.

C.  All incoming students fill out a CTE pathway survey prior to starting their 9th grade year. This survey is reviewed by the counselor prior to enrolling students into the selected CTE program.

D.  During the 9th grade, students take a career choices class where students will learn about different careers and help them identify their desired CTE program that fits their career goals.

E.   Parent(s)/guardian(s) may schedule meetings with a counselor at a mutually convenient time to discuss further details about CTE programs.

F.   Brochures, which describe career technical education programs including academic courses, cooperative education, and special education resources.

H.   CTE video information, including this policy and procedures will be posted on the DJUHSD web site.

I. CTE programs are highlighted during the school introductions at Back to School night, parent advisory meetings and other school events.

All grade eight students will apply using the following process:

A.   In the spring, 8th grade students are provided a CTE pathway survey from the counseling department to select their preferred CTE Program. This survey is used by the counselors for guidance and to monitor completion of their desired CTE pathway.

B.   The counselor reviews the pathway options and sequence of courses.

C.   Students are registered in the sequence of classes that are part of their chosen CTE Program. The expectation is that students complete all pathway classes and become a completer.

All students are encouraged to enroll into a career technical education program based on their career interest. The CTE Director, site administration, counselors and the CTE program instructors will evaluate students using the following categories:

o    Completed student CTE pathway survey/elective sheet

o    Completion of pre-requisite classes if required

Incoming 9th grade students choose their desired CTE programs upon enrolling into high school and typically begin their selected CTE pathway classes in the 10th grade after the completion of a career choices classes taken in the 9th grade. For those students who were enrolling in an impacted program, they may choose to enroll in their second option or be placed on a waiting list for their first option.  No student will be rejected from taking CTE courses.

Transfer students from other state-approved programs are eligible to apply for fall admission or admission during the school year to the career technical education programs grades 9-12. Transfer students will be admitted based on the selection criteria contained in this Admission Procedure.

A.  Transfer students are encouraged to stay on a similar career technical education program that they are coming from.

B.  If the student’s desired CTE program is not available, the student should be transferred into their 2nd CTE Program of choice.

Students who wish to transfer from one C.T.E. program to another may apply for transfer. Transfer requests will be considered subject to the availability of openings in the requested programs. Each transfer applicant will be interviewed and counseled individually to determine the appropriateness of the transfer. Students who withdraw from their CTE program will be scheduled to future CTE programs following the procedures contained in this admission policy and will be evaluated using the selection criteria contained in this Admission Procedure.

The applicant’s parent/guardian, upon notification from the school site that the applicant was not accepted or placed on a waiting list for particular program list, may request a review of the decision by sending a letter requesting a review to the C.T.E. Director within 30 days of the notice. The

C.T.E. Director will respond to the request with the findings of the review within 30days.

Any eighth grade student entering into DJUHSD and ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade student who is a student in the DJUHSD is eligible to apply for fall admission or admission during the school year subject to availability of openings to the vocational technical education programs. Admission shall be based on the following four categories:

• Grades
• Attendance
• Discipline/Conduct
• Recommendation (Guidance/Administration)

DJUHSD high schools are public schools located in Delano, California. C.T.E. is accredited by WASC. C.T.E. is committed to providing quality vocational and career technical education programs. It is the responsibility of the DJUHSD CTE Director to supervise the administration of the policies and procedures required to admit and enroll applicants in conformity with this Admission Policy.

Effective 2013-14, this policy will become part of the CTE program, ensuring annual review by the school committee and dissemination to students, parents and guardians.
