Delano HS S-Club Receives Community Award
The Delano High School S-Club chapter was awarded the Youth Leadership Award from the Chamber of Commerce. S-Club is a service club made up of high school student who are concerned with improving the quality of life for themselves and those around them. They work in cooperation with their school to build high standards and ideals, and to prepare members to assume leadership roles in the business and professinoal world. Each club chooses the programs of service they believe will better their school and community. Each "S" club must have a campus advisor who works with the Soroptimist Advisor to advise and assist the "S" club members in their actvities.
Each individual club member volunteers about 300 hours per year. Here is a few of the many things they do yearly:
- Every Wednesday – Princeton: Help students with homework, then read books/stories
- 2nd and 4th Thursdays – Elks Lodge Bingo: Serve refreshments and clean up
- 1st Fridays – Elks Lodge Veteran’s Breakfast: Serve and clean up
- Every Friday – Soup Kitchen without Walls Homeless Ministry: prepare sandwiches for sack lunches with water bottles, chips, fruit, and soup. One hundred sack lunches w/soup are prepared on Friday and distributed to homeless on Saturday.
- 2nd and 4th Tuesdays – Delano Library: Will begin assisting with craft events held for children.
- Month of July – Christian Family Concert Event – Helped with children events and worked the cotton candy, popcorn, and shaved ice booth at Cecil Park.
- July 29, 30, 31 – Philippine Weekend: Clean up all day, throughout the day.
- September – Teen Dating Violence/Crisis Awareness: Passed out bookmarks with dating quiz, information of awareness, with several hotline numbers and contacts on school premises.
- October 3 – Anti-Bullying Awareness Day: passed out post-it notes in school with positive messages written on them throughout the school creating an act of kindness and challenging others to do the same.
- Month of October: Helped at Princeton Halloween Carnival, Del Vista Halloween Carnival, and the Delano Street Fair through the Chamber of Commerce
- Oct. 29 Soroptimist “Girls Night Out” Membership Drive: Decorated barn for the event
- November 14-18 – Homeless Awareness Week: Each day they collected toiletries, canned food, loose change, water bottles. Everything collected last year was given to Community Connection. This year, it was given to Soup Kitchen without Walls Homeless Ministry.
- Christmas Decorating Heritage Park, Stuffing Christmas Stockings for National Guard Armory, Christmas Parade help.
- Chamber of Commerce event: Crab feed – Helped with serving/clean-up
- They will be working closely with the Delano Chamber of Commerce to become “Ambassadors”
- Last year – they also assisted community with yard sales, garage clean ups, packed school books to be sent to Philippines for San Joaquin Christian School, Christmas wrapping at various business.
- March 4 - Relay for Life yard sale
- March 31 - Delano Community Gardens Service day
- April 8-9 – Relay for Life set up/clean up
- April 28-30 Combined Service Clubs Leadership Conference: DHS S-Club will host the event
