It's a Titan Celebration
As is our Titan tradition and motto- CCHS is “A school where learning and academic, artistic, and athletic achievement is fostered, recognized, and celebrated,”- our Titans gathered on the morning of Friday, May 26th, 2017 for a schoolwide assembly where we recognized and celebrated achievements in Academics, Athletics and the Arts. Led by our Division V Valley Champion CCHS Boys Varsity Soccer Team, SSL League Champion CCHS Boys Varsity Basketball Team, and our undefeated, PPAAC Senior National Open Champion CCHS Titan Winter Percussion ensemble our celebration included honoring our five CCHS Titan Student winners of this year’s Young Writers of Kern.
The event began with a welcome and introduction by our principal, Mr. Ben DeLeon, who introduced honored guests Dennis I. VanderWerff, Ph.D., Chair of Young Writers of Kern Essay Competition and Kern County Judge David Wolfe. Representing Judge Robert Tafoya and Young Writers of Kern, both of them rallied the audience in congratulating Mr. Barker and Mr. Rodarte for their efforts in inspiring our five winners of this year’s essay contest. They then called the winners up and handed them a certificate and a $200 scholarship.
Next came Mr. Alex Gonzales, Band Director, where he thanked the school administration, spefically Mr. Jimmie Beltran, for recognizing their activity as a competitive "Sport of the Art's" by awarding the program their four Championship Banners, 09' ,12' ,16' and 17'. In 13 seasons they have acquired 11 medals: 2 bronze, 4 silver, and 5 gold. The last two years they were undefeated, 35-0 and 29-0 in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In 2017, they competed and lead in Open Class Division 1 in Central California where they are the current PPAACC Gold Medalist Champions. "The kids dedication to their school music program is unparalleled and they are extremely proud of their accomplishments both from a personal perspective and as a school" said Mr. G.
Coach Alfonso Hernandez next shared an inspiring story of resilience and to honor the exploits of his “Havoc” squad, this year’s SSL Champion boys varsity Basketball team. Mr. Beltran followed and paid tribute to the late Varsity Head Coach, Mr. Apolinar Hernandez by sharing how this year’s Valley Champs rallied to dedicate their season and championship to their beloved coach who passed away recently after a hard fought battle with cancer. Mr. Beltran led all Titans in observing a minute of silence in his memory. Coach Tony Mendez energized the crowd and by introducing this year’s Division V Soccer Valley Champions.
The Championship Banners were unveiled to the roar of the crowd who were then dismissed by Mr. DeLeon to transition to 2 hours of fun and games as a gesture of appreciation for what he called, an “EPIC” year.
