ENGLISH LITERACY AND CIVICS EDUCATION

  • The purpose of the EL Civics program is to provide integrated English literacy and civics education services to immigrants and other limited English proficient populations.  The activities of EL Civics should not only assist these populations with improving their English skills, but also help them understand and navigate governmental, educational, and workplace systems.

  • Civic Participation

The focus area supports the design, creation, implementation and deliver of instructional activities that integrates civics education content with ESL programs. The programs connect literacy to the lives of learners and reflect their experiences as community members, parents, and participants in the workforce.

     Citizenship Preparation

This focus area uses ESL methodologies and citizenship preparation material to prepare learners to take and pass the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services written and oral citizenship test.

  • Delano Adult School students enrolled in the EL Civics program were surveyed to see which Civic objectives they thought were most important.  Below are the four Civic objectives that were selected to be taught in our Civics program for the 2013-2014 school year.
