In Delano we are known for our grapes but behind those grapes lies workers with children, children who rely on schools to educate them, support them, and help them to graduate.
(Kristine Carrillo, student worker.) So the after school tutorial program here at Cesar E. Chavez is really great because it really benefits the students in that not only are they getting the help they need in the subjects they struggle in but also they're getting that help along with their peers that also need tutoring and they're getting that help from students who are in AP courses who have gone through the subjects that they've gone through before so they know what they're doing and what they're talking about. And it's not as intimidating as a student might be in asking a teacher for help. It's alot more of a comfortable environment and it really helps them.
(Estevan Ramirez, AP Physics teacher) Saturday school is for the AP Physics class and AP is like no other class. It's a very intense course, very rigorous, alot of material and so the purpose of the Saturday review sessions is either to review for an upcoming test or do a post-review of a test that we took. We do this in Saturday school. Because Saturday school is outside of school hours, your normal 8am-3pm, technically I'm not allowed to teach any new material but I'm allowed to review that has already been taught. So if I do a review session before the test, we typically review the questions that are going to be on the exam but if we do the post review, we do the earn your stripes, where students get to work together to earn more or less points.
How I feel it benefits the students is that it gives them additional reinforcements, gives them the opportunity to exchange ideas with other students, to ask really good questions, to not feel rushed, and its a good chance to experience the material again especially outside of the program.
(Jaime Magana Jr., student tutored) This program helps me by showing me new ways of learning certain subjects for example I'm new in math. I think this program is a great program to really help people out when they are in need of learning situations and when they can't understand the materials.
(Kristine Carrillo, student worker) Like on a math problem or they're struggling in science and they don't know the concept very well. Just being able to help them really gives you a feeling of satisfaction and you really earn gratification from that because you know that being in this program isn't just beneficial for you but that you're recognized for this and you can put this on an application for college and it's knowing you are putting an impact on somebody's lives and you're helping them in their education career.
In order to maintain success we must continue to invest in our education seeing it as a ticket to a brighter future and a better life.

Testimonials:
"Tutoring is a challenge, especially when you're the quiet type. It's a great feeling knowing I'm able to help people in need of assistance. Personally, for me, I view it as a chance to get outside of my comfort zone. Sometimes, you have got to have the guts and the courage to do things unconventional to your chapter. By doing so, you grow more experienced as a person, which, in my opinion, is a vital component to success. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to tutor fellow students." -Ian Rey Refuerzo, student tutor
"I really liked that we had a lot of tutors to help." - Maria Andrade, student
"Students sometimes can understand better from their peers than from a teacher." - Mr. Fontejon, teacher
"After-school tutorial offered by the Advanced Placement teachers have helped me immensely in my education. If it wasn't for the extra help I received out of class, I wouldn't have understood the more difficult concepts in my AP statistics course. Thanks to the additional time spent going over the material and getting more practice, I was able to pass the AP statistics exam. Thank you to our donors who help students like me successfully reach our educational goals." - Kristine Carrillo, student.
