History of Delano High School
-
The Beginning
Delano High School was started in 1911 with 14 students and two teachers in the Methodist Church west of the railroad. A $50,000 bond issue was proposed at the time, and although there was much opposition, it passed. Some who opposed construction of such a large building were mollified to some extent when they learned the basement area could be used for grain storage. The new building was erected, and in 1912 students trudged through fields to attend school in the original majestic building which was in he middle of a wheat field on the current site. The first graduation was held in 1914 with six graduates. Additional buildings were constructed in 1924 and 1938, the auditorium was built in 1940 and the remainder of the current school was finished in the 1950s and 1960s.
Today
Delano High School is over 100 years old and our school motto, " A Century of Academic Excellence and Achievement, captures the essence of who we are: we value our traditions, we are united by Tiger pride, and we serve our community through our ongoing commitment to academic excellence.
